About the Course
As additive manufacturing processes are getting into mainstream industrial production, it becomes more important than ever to demonstrate Quality Assurance to create quality products. The Quality Assurance for Additive Manufacturing (AM) course will provide attendees with a strong baseline knowledge of what Quality Assurance means for AM, and what to consider when making components for critical applications.
This short course will include an interactive workshop, where the participants will be able to review a typical Quality Assurance challenge, and how you would manage it.
Course level: Beginner
Note: This short certificate course will take place on Sunday, October 30th, 2022 prior to ICAM 2022 and is only available to ICAM 2022 attendees. This course is not included in ICAM registration and will incur an additional fee.

After completing the course, the attendees will be able to achieve the following:
- Understand quality assurance aspects for AM process and products
- Knowledge of the quality requirements for an AM facility
- Able to link quality concepts to the requirements of Qualification and Certification
- Appreciate the need for quality assurance for AM process chain
- Considerations while making parts for critical applications
Who Should Attend
This course is aimed at individuals who wish to increase their basic experience in Quality Assurance or those who have experience from other manufacturing technologies and wish to understand where AM may be different. More experienced individuals are also encouraged to join the course to support and improve their current knowledge.

Martin White
Dr. Martin White is Head of Additive Manufacturing Programs – European region at ASTM International responsible for various AM programs in Europe. Martin is a Materials & Structures Specialist, with 20 years of experience in both academic and industrial fields. His recent career has focused on the Certification & Production of Aerospace structures, ranging from the A350-900 XWB Main Landing Gear at Safran Landing Systems, to his most recent role as Chief Engineer for Additive Manufacturing at GKN Aerospace. He spent his early career studying with Rolls Royce at Swansea University to obtain a Doctorate in High Temperature Materials for Gas Turbine applications, as well as a Masters in High Strength Steels for Landing Gears (with Airbus), before spending several years as a consultant at Frazer-Nash Consultancy. At Frazer-Nash, he worked across multiple industries – including Aerospace, Civil Nuclear, Defence, and Oil & Gas.

Paul Bates
Paul Bates is an Additive Manufacturing Lead Project Engineer for the ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence. In his role, he brings his technical expertise to drive the projects in Additive Manufacturing training, safety, and certification. He is an industry-recognized AM veteran.Before joining ASTM, Bates was the Manager for Facility safety and Workforce Development in Additive Manufacturing at UL and served 20+ years at Reebok, where he guided the global athletic footwear leader’s Additive Manufacturing Lab and 3D CAD Team as the Director of Advanced Process Engineering. A 2012 recipient of the Additive Manufacturing User Group (AMUG) “Dinosaur” Award, Bates is fluent in numerous AM processes, including DMLS, SLS, FDM, and PolyJet. He is the Past President of the Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG). He has a BS degree in Design Technology from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green OH, and a Master’s Degree in Technology Management from the University of Phoenix.
